The
capital and the largest city of Greece located in the most-southern of
balkan Peninsula and it is one of the oldest cities in the world. The
focal point of athens is naturally the Acropolis. the word "Acropolis"
means "city on the hill". Neolithis remains (5000 B.C) have been found
on the Acropolis and the central hills of the city, showing that this
area was inhabited well before the 6th century that the classical era
of Athens developed date. The name Athens stems from the goddess
Athena, worshiped in ancient times. For the visitor it contains a
fascinating glimpse of the world of the ancient Greeks who once walked
in its streets. Socrates, Plato, Pericles are amongst the famous names
you will come across as you jurney around the ancient city, not to
mention the roman and Byzantine presence evident alongside the temples
and arches of classical Greece. However Athens has more to show than
its heritage.
 
Athens
was selected as the host city of the 2004 Olympic Games in Lausanne,
Switzerland on 5 September 1997. On that same day, the Host City
Contract for the Games of the XXVIII Olympiad was signed. These events
marked the beginning of a unique journey in the history of Olympism
that will culminate in Greece from 13 to 29 August 2004. The Games are
returning home to the country that gave birth to the Olympic
celebration more than 2,000 years ago and the city that staged the
first modern Olympic Games in 1896.
